Historically, empire and democracy are joined at the hip! It’s a constant. The idea of a non-interventionist democratic republic is very new relatively speaking. Trace the history from Athens to early Rome, the Mogul empire, the Italian city states, mercantilism and the list goes on.

The American is the most interventionist empire ever which has led to the death of the republic, democracy and moral and fiscal destitution.

I would argue they are not "joined at the hip" for empires to exist democracy is the sacrifice. Empires by definition must be autocratic and despotic which leads to their ulimate collapse.
