We might see life as the eternal quest for rising above our human imperfections for survival in a world we never fully comprehend and more than willing to desecrate.
The U.S. had empire in its origins and founding. Expansionism is its fundamental thrust. Creating a continental empire was the original vision. When that was accomplished it moved into the world in 1898 with the Spanish-American War. The global empire emerged over decades until it fully emerged in 1945. But as with Rome, which expanded even as it maintained a republic, the forces of empire consumed it. Caesar crossed the Rubicon. I would say the Kennedy Assassination signified the shift from republic to empire. Today it is in decline, but as you say, is a vengeful beast. I don’t think we can restore the republic until we shed the empire and its institutions, military and “intelligence.”
Yes, we desecrate plenty! And the more those profiting from it, the more is desecrated. What I don't understand is why we are told, and follow, to adhere to violent-free protests...and yet, they have taken us NOWHERE! I don't believe in 'turning the other cheek' more than twice and then...fight fire with fire. Yes, there will be deaths but aren't we enduring more than our share of deaths at the hands of those 'above us'? Aren't we enduring more than our share of intimidation? Just shrugging it off is NOT the answer. Aren't our rights and guaranteed liberties being desecrated?
I ask myself the same question and I think the answer is that what is called Western Civilization has been so heavily propagandized and colonized for so long there is a passivity that may be enduring. We forget the 50 states-the Republic- are in themselves colonies to the empire seated in Washington and are roundly exploited.
The executive branch of the US government has been seizing the levers of power over decades and Trump has now consolidated them and the presidency is now a dictatorship. So the populations of the West, especially America, have to make the decision to take back what was stolen or live with the tyranny. We won't know the answer for many years to come. There is no question now the US faces a period of tumult and internecine conflict as a society deeply corrupted and hostage to the empire.
It must be added here the disbanding of NATO and the member states showing some back bone and resolve would be a huge step toward the positive reformation of the West.
The absolutely corrupt and propagandist Western Mainstream Media has played a major role in creating this crisis.
It is human nature that we shy away from addressing the issues and ideologies most threatening to our existence... now we must face them head on.
It is also worth reminding ourselves that where our countries are vigorous healthy democracies the "the crazies in the basement" don't get to rule.
The building of the "unitary executive" in part by Billy Barr and the Federalist Society is fully documented in Craig Ungers book American Kompromat along with the full relationship between Rump and his protege Epstein.
Are there any 'healthy democracies' left??? What you call 'shy away' I would call "cowardice", lack of backbone and sheer intimidation - mainly by a US seeking hegemony...and now with Trump in the Out House...going from bad to worse to worser. Slightly off subject...by the time the Trump regime ends (when?), America will have changed and not for the better...and neither the rest of the world.
Alas, Vera when I try to be diplomatic you won't let me get a way with it! You will no doubt find my up coming blog "Geopolitics as a Scapegoater's Paradise". In the West scapegoating is institutionalized as a form of political cowardice.

Agreed, the Republic is buried deep.
And if war and empire can be repudiated, then perhaps we can have many more days without nuclear winter. Enjoy them while they last.
Caesar rode a horse with his toes down and heels up. Unfit rider.

Have never claimed to be 'diplomatic'...:-) I call them as I see 'em.
