The Great Canadian Media/politico sham show
Dancing around the prickly pear with broken tambourines.
Where I used to follow Canadian politics closely I have moved on. For the politicians, in collaboration with our government subsidized media, it has become a sham show, some where between infotainment and a burlesque soap opera. Too much of what goes on is totally cringe worthy mixed with large does of petty bickering and endless hypocrisies.
Bad leadership drags whole countries and systems down and there is no shortage of that in what is known as Western Civilization. In a time of world crisis the Western media has shown their heart is with the corporations that own them and the corporations that run the wars in reckless pursuit of more power and profits, no questions asked. You write the right stuff with a close shave and you get your cheque at the end of the month otherwise you suffer the martyrdom of a Julian Assange or a Tucker Carlson. Its called cheque-book journalism.
It has long been lamented fellow journalists do not speak in defense of freedom of the press and the injustices visited on Carlson and Assange; but of course like politicians, their loyalty is bought and paid for.
The Canadian media is having a hard time with the global crisis as it just keeps launching bottomless boats that just won’t float . What they report is totally out of sync with what reporters and journalists from around the world are telling us. They are also displaying a stellar ignorance of history; but of course propaganda’s whole purpose is to erase history and context. They are shut-ins locked down in a society dangerously parochial and disconnected from the rest of the world.
Canada’s media pundits and politicians have a tacit compact :-politicians under perform, and pundits under report and everybody lives happily ever.
There is cause for hollowed celebration as the incumbent prime minister is at the top of polls. This is only because Canada exists as a single party state where democracy is in the deep freeze. Until such time as it thaws out and resuscitated he and his party are the default place holders.
As it is, he will mark time until the 2025 federal election when the redoubtable Chrystia Freeland will be ordained PM, all others need not apply.
None of the other parties are an option for voters reconciled to holding their noses while they express vehement contempt of the status quo . The leader of the CPC is the sorcerer’s apprentice and not electable as PM. The leader of the NDP is the PM’s bag man and has morphed into a US style democrat cheering for more war. The leader of Green party has a ghostly presence as her party committed suicide in their previous choice of leader passing over the obvious first choice- the high cost of political correctness where there is an abundance. Life in the political hinterlands for these latter two parties is going to be even more obscure for all comers.
There are pretenders to the throne like Kevin O’leary who persistently remind Canadians we have the worst prime minister in our history. We know that too well. He ran for the CPC with an eye to becoming PM but just as quickly withdrew. He was going to be the business messiah to set the country back on course but turned out to be another dancer around the prickly pear with his broken tambourine. He is a successful business man but that doesn’t necessarily equate to being a capable PM. Like the present prime minister he is a self-aggrandizing show boat.
The prime minister’s choice of a former governor general and personal family friend was a rapporteur on Chinese interference in Canadian affairs was another instance of the PM’s egregious bad judgment. It created endless grist for media mills and was much ado about nothing. Canada exists as a neoliberal satrap for the empire next door and a cat’s paw for the empires foreign interventions.
Who are we complain about interventionism when our foreign policy is dictated by our next door neighbor.
As I write this the Canadian Navy has ships in the straits of Taiwan exercising gun boat diplomacy, in concert with the US Navy, trying to provoke war with China.
How would we react if the Chinese Navy was “patrolling” the Gulf of Lawrence or the inside passage of Vancouver Island?
Just as Ukraine was sacrificed by NATO as a Trojan horse to attack Russia; it is using Taiwan as a Trojan horse to attack China. The Trojan horse is oldest trick in the book going back to antiquity and still used today where willful ignorance and propaganda may decide the future of the planet.
It would seem the Canadian media and our less than intrepid politicians, like so many others in the delusional West, are dancing around the prickly pear with broken tambourines—the musical instrument delegated to novices.
