The anarchist Emma Goldman who died in Toronto in 1940 wrote that "western democracies are just fascism in disguise", and that "the most violent element in society is ignorance". The average Canadian is as ignorant as the average US citizen, by design.

Very interesting she drew that conclusion so early in the game. I often wonder how much ignorance is willful. As I have said elsewhere the Ukraine conflict has blown the lid off the rot in the West showing how deeply fascism is embedded.

Truth be told, the Covid and Ukraine issues are the first instances in which I had the leisure to devote a substantial amount of my time to researching the underlying fundamentals. Based on this independent research I have now come to re-evaluate everything I thought I "knew". From Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Serbia, Central America, the role of the CIA, Presidental assassinations and much more. Democracy is based on a well informed electorate. What if the electorate is ill-informed? But I am preaching to the choir, I think.

Covid forced me take an early retirement at the age of 76. Retirement has allowed me to focus on history and politics more than ever and follow events on a daily basis. My learning curve has exploded in the last few years.

"early retirement at 76", funny! I can relate, am semi-retired as well. Having time on your hands to read and explore is a tricky thing. One discovers that not all is what it seems and that one was foolish and naive when younger. Both, Humbling and liberating.
