Where are the worthy inheritors of the great humanist legacy?
To hell with Artificial Intelligence(AI), when basic Human Intelligence(HI) is so lacking !
….. Habitually turning our accomplishments into curses.
It is totally mystifying to me we are so concerned about AI when good old basic human intelligence needs a swift kick in the ass to get it going. When I refer to human intelligence I refer to the faculties we were blessed with at birth and nurtured and developed through to adulthood. We should be committed to a life time of learning, understanding and adapting. Out of living, learning and experience wisdom arrives like a good whiskey, they are blended into Common Sense.
Common Sense is a religion we should all pursue with great zeal, especially that which passed on to us from earlier times and generations. But like arrogant impertinent children we set up our false gods and prophets and scorn the past even though it is inescapable. It defines us as people and cultures. If we refuse to acknowledge our pasts there is no foundation for the present and we have no sense of reality, trapping us in the present , and contemplating fractured futures.
Cultural amnesia is never a great way to live. To have our culture stolen from us is a crime of the greatest magnitude — and there are those more than willing to commit that crime ongoing and are actively doing so now.
Common Sense and Democracy are the two key ideologies we must live by. They are our most noble pursuits; but also our most vulnerable, so easily subverted by self-serving fascists and despots, sponsoring their self-serving ideologies capable of ruining whole societies as history testifies to over and over again.
Freedom and Democracy require constant vigilance. Where they are lacking we end up where we are today with democracy and its institutions atrophied by criminal subversions and benign neglect. Without common sense and democracy we can not hope to influence or define the present, let alone the future if our past has been buried under propaganda misinformation and an appalling ignorance of our own history.
Our deadly ideologies
I have always maintained that politics is the triumph of negative ideologies over common sense and democracy. Once a person enters politics they bonded to a political party and its ideology. Ideologies like political parties rise and fall, some more radical than others, some amenable to democracy and common sense, others less so.
The problem facing the collective West today is that over time we have allowed prevailing ideologies, operating in concert, to become so powerful and out of control they have created a vortex so menacing its creators are now prisoners to it. These ideologies are militarism, war, corporatism, neoliberalism, totalitarianism—along with a few others. They are trapped in their own machinations desperately trying to control a calamity of their own making as the reverberations become more profound they become more and more desperate .
When NATO member states were so stupid as to provoke an imperialist proxy war against Russia they blew the lid off their barrel shit and treachery of the last half-century for all to see. They so foolish to think they could go to war against a major trading partner thinking they would have economic impunity, and plausible deniability. They ignored war is also revelation, it is self-incrimination for all to see.
They never took into account the empire they serve was more than willing to cannibalize their economies to serve itself .
Empires know no intelligence, just greed, violence and plunder.
Deny deny deny
Many years ago I was reading the account of a murder trial. The accused was caught in a telephone tap telling a key witness to “deny, deny, deny.” The telephone tap and a whole lot of other evidence sent the accused to prison for life. This is the same position the Western elites are in today where they are playing the same game of deny, deny, deny— but there is a trail of evidence going back 50 years and more making them totally liable for the present crisis.
Half a century of perpetual war is fatal self-degradation— only to wake up in the night mare of the present lacking the courage to show an ounce of contrition, wallowing in more blood and destruction.
The crisis is of their own making as they try to project blame on to others, scapegoating their own corruptions, and policy failures. In doing so they are holding the world community hostage to wars and militarism capable of destroying themselves and the entire the planet.
They refuse to acknowledge the planet is the highly populated, highly integrated home for almost 8 billion people. Their insistence on perpetual war and the resulting economic and cultural instability is an unconscionable crime against humanity.
They refuse to accept they are their own worst enemy desperately trying to control a narrative lost long ago.
Our blocked human intelligence
As any medical practitioner will tell us disease and malignancies are intelligence blockers; unconsciousness being the ultimate blocker preceding death. It applies to both individuals and societies. Where societal consciousness is dimmed and warped we suffer accordingly.
The collective West is frozen in time and political process and nothing will change until a new equilibrium is established and the first essential is to step down from the pulpit of war and anarchy. War is a craven infantile paralysis we impose on ourselves and the complete denigration of our humanity.
From the time of the stone age Humankind has always been a technological genius; but when comes to managing our human affairs our history is littered dead bodies and the utter stupidity of wars. We are now at a pivot point in human history where we must maintain a new standard of human intelligence and consciousness, for the survival of the planet. We can no longer afford the psychosis of war, ruinous ideologies, and the hideous cravings of megalomaniacs.
We have weaponized our human intelligence. Artificial intelligence is here and weaponized. We weaponized splitting the atom to create the nuclear night mare we now suffer through.
We are not worthy custodians of either nuclear bombs or artificial intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence can only be a useful tool based on well grounded human intelligence and sound policies and protocols not available in the present.
We are children lost in matrix of technologies and ideologies we fail to manage.
We are idiot savants who develop semiconductors and then fight wars over who is going to control them when they should be freely available to all.
Where are the worthy inheritors of the great human legacy?
And if Human Intelligence is so lacking...can Artificial Intelligence be any better - being programmed by humans???
Incisive required reading. Great stuff keenly observed, thanks to you Robert.
