Memorandum to my fellow Canadians
The subject in question is only of passing interest to me at this point. I used to have genuine concern for this country and its future, but you can only bang your head against the wall so many times, then it is time to move on.
Long before the present prime minister assumed the keys to the PMO there were many Canadians concerned with his ascension to high office. My own concerns were echoed by prominent national journalists whose warnings fell on deaf ears.
The present prime minister came to office as an MP, and quickly proved to be a mediocre performer. He then proceeded to run for the leadership on the Liberal party on the strength of his family name and the high regard many Canadians hold for his father’s legacy. Though I never voted for him I respected him as a competent leader.
Does the we son have the right stuff? The answer is a definitive, No! But eight years later he lingers on long past his best before date. His celebrity has soured to where he is the target of mockery, domestically and internationally, and pot shots from every direction. He has offended leaders world wide, from the Pope to China’s President, the entire German Bundestag, and most recently the president of Italy.
As you see from the screen shot above, you can scroll through Amazon.ca and view the endless products taking pot shots at the PM.
It does not inspire pride in one’s country when a war mongering president and a “has been” US politician show up and our 338 parliamentarians behave like over wrought school children.
Nor does it inspire national pride when the G7 sock puppets parade around Japan posing for photo ops when their economies are in steep decline, and Germany has seen its economy shattered by NATO’s wars, and has officially just gone into recession.
It would seem politics of the Western hemisphere is all about optics, propaganda and pot shots and not much more.
It does not national inspire pride when our legislators are mindless cheerleaders for war.
Nobody wants to address the actual cause of the deep seated derision directed at a failed prime minister, especially the national media which continually shaves it content in favor of the incumbent government. It takes its share of pot shots at the PM while failing to identify what should be obvious to any journalist worth their salt. They are not reporters and analysts, they are simply are an echo chamber for a lethargic government and political culture.
The real reason Canada is on the rocks is we are no longer a sovereign democracy. Over the last 75 years we have chosen to be a fully colonized country. With colonization comes the colonial mind set where the skills and ability for effective self -governance are lost— cast upon winds of indifference and abdication.
Where the father spoke strongly in favor of an effective federalism the son, and his immediate predecessor , are agents of balkanization/colonization and everything these entail.
We fail to address the momentous influence the neoliberal ideology has had on the country and our propensity to go to war at the drop of a hat.
Canada urgently needs Proportionate Representation (PR) which the Liberal party has promised for over 100 years and never delivered. The reason is obvious. It would go a long way to re-democratizing the country and holding governing parties accountable. As it is now the Liberals rule with only 32 % of the popular vote; the CPC(Conservative) has 33% of the popular and far fewer seats. This is what we call democracy in Canada!
Democracy is busted, the electoral system broken and political parties have had their integrity and identities erased. Little wonder Canadians protest, “ There is nobody to vote for”. Translated this means our political culture has collapsed, where there is no real choice, no real democracy, and the electoral system broken such that it fosters the single party state, and a party that immolated itself long ago.
We Canadians might want to spend this coming Canada Day reflecting on our future, in a fast changing rough and tumble world.
